Artist Statement: Liz Sunshine, Future Fashion & Our Relationship With Clothes

For over a decade, I’ve been captivated by the ways clothing shapes the identities and stories of individuals. As a documentary fashion photographer, I’ve witnessed how style communicates culture, self-expression, and personality. However, as my career evolved, I found myself grappling with a disconnect between my love for fashion and the confusion I felt in my own relationship with clothes. I adored them, but they often made me feel bad about myself, complicating my wardrobe choices and contributing to the growing sense of overwhelm surrounding consumption. This tension sparked a new direction in my work—Our Relationship With Clothes.

This project began as a personal exploration and soon blossomed into a broader conversation. It involves both art and dialogue—asking people questions about their relationship with clothing, sharing these responses, and creating space for people to reflect on their habits and values. Through my work, I aim to highlight how clothes have the power to shape our self-esteem, sense of belonging, and the way we see the world. This shift in perspective is not about telling people what to wear but about encouraging them to connect with their clothing in a mindful, intentional way that values quality over quantity.

My latest work, Future Fashion, is a culmination of this exploration—a reflection on style as we age. Created using AI, these images of older women are intended to inspire confidence and joy, illustrating a future where style knows no age limits. This is not a project about selling clothes or promoting trends, but rather about imagining a world where creativity and individuality are the true markers of beauty. AI allowed me to visualize what these women might look like in a future where fashion and age coexist freely, unrestricted by societal expectations or beauty standards.

In my 10-year career as a photographer, I often faced rejection when approaching older women for portraits, mainly due to a lack of confidence or fear of judgment. But through AI, I could create images that celebrated their beauty without the barriers of reality, inviting people to imagine themselves in this future. These images serve as a love letter to our future selves—reminding us that aging is not something to fear or hide, but something to embrace.

The Future Fashion series is also a reflection on the growing homogenization of beauty standards. As global fashion and beauty ideals continue to converge, it’s vital to remember that true diversity and individuality must be celebrated, not diminished. These AI-generated portraits, while beautiful, unintentionally reflect a narrowing of identities, and that, too, is an important social commentary.

At the heart of Our Relationship With Clothes is the belief that fashion should be about more than just the garments we wear—it should be a conduit for connection. From mothers dressing their children to friends borrowing clothes and finding common ground in shared style, clothing is deeply entwined with the communities we build. It transcends the individual and acts as a powerful tool for bonding and self-expression. This project is as much about sparking conversation as it is about creating art. Through dialogue, I hope to empower others to reflect on how they engage with their clothes and inspire positive change toward more mindful consumption.

Through my work, I hope to foster a community—one that celebrates individuality, embraces self-reflection, and seeks to build a future where fashion is no longer driven by relentless consumption but by meaningful, sustainable choices. This is the vision I aim to bring to life through Future Fashion and Our Relationship With Clothes.

In her artistic research, Liz Sunshine explores the relationship between people and their clothing, focusing on consumption and studying individual behaviour through documentary fashion photography and conversation. Her work, characterised by curiosity and discovery, invites viewers to reflect on the opportunity for mindful and conscious choices.

FUTURE FASHION is a fine art series and book exploring the idea of style as we age. An extension of Sunshine’s documentary work, these synthetic images were produced in 2023 and speak to a future tense, inviting viewers to imagine a future where style knows no age limits and creativity has no bounds.

In an age where daily exposure to shoppable images encourage relentless consumption, Sunshine says “I’ve created these works in the hopes of giving you the confidence to be yourself.”

The images serve as a reminder to look beyond our screens and reflect inward when seeking inspiration.

Future Fashion: Artist Statement by Liz Sunshine

In a world where fashion often dictates trends, shapes our identities, and drives relentless consumption, I’ve set out to create a space for something different—a space that encourages reflection, creativity, and freedom of self-expression, especially as we age. Through Future Fashion, I invite you to step into a future where style knows no age limits and creativity has no bounds.

As an artist, my practice revolves around understanding the relationship we have with our clothing—how it shapes us, how we interact with it, and how consumption influences our decisions and identities. Future Fashion is an extension of my ongoing documentary work, yet it ventures into uncharted territory. By using AI technology to generate these images in 2023, I’m presenting a vision of style not confined by time or age. These digital creations ask us to imagine a world where we are no longer bound by outdated notions of what we should wear or who we should be.

This series is not about pushing more products or promoting fleeting trends. Rather, it’s about inspiring you to reflect on the choices you make, the power of authenticity, and the confidence to embrace your own unique style. I believe that style isn’t about fitting into predefined molds—it’s about expressing who we are, at any stage of life.

Future Fashion asks us to look beyond the constant stream of shoppable images and reimagine what it means to dress for ourselves, not for others. As you experience this collection, I hope you find the courage to embrace your personal style, free from external pressures, and with an eye toward a future where self-expression is limitless.

ARTIST STATEMENT

When I think of the women around me, I see myself. I see strength, fragility, courage, pain, and hope. I see hours spent together in wardrobes pulling out clothes, discussing outfits, moods, moments - life.

Connection to the women around us, often through clothing, is a significant part of our lives.

First, our mothers dress us, then our sisters raid our wardrobes, and as teenagers, we might find our tribes based on how we dress; all these experiences and memories are embedded deep within the fabric's fibre.

Now, I see us growing older and these patterns repeating.

As we get greyer, rounder, less worried about the outside world, and more selfish with our time, I see colours and fabrics we were too afraid to wear when we were young; I see us wanting to be seen - standing tall, bringing joy to the world.

FUTURE FASHION Book

FUTURE FASHION is a 216-page coffee-table book featuring 100 images of visually older women. A soft activism project that explores a future fantasy for all women who love, seek and respect clothing as a form of identity.

The book results from a theorised AI research project and supports our mission to cultivate a positive and empowered connection between people and their clothing.

As the largest consumer of textiles in the world, Australia has to adopt a significant role in promoting sustainable fashion. By encouraging women to value their clothes and consider the impact of style and age on confidence, this book is a step towards a more conscious and responsible fashion culture.
